Traditional & History
The Gadigal and Bidjigal Clans, the original custodians of this Sydney Coast area, have a rich cultural heritage. Originally known as South Kensington, Kingsford was renamed in 1936 to pay tribute to the esteemed Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who passed away in 1935. This renaming extended to the nearby Sydney Airport, also honouring Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.
Housing
Mainly a residential area, Kingsford has a mixture of housing types including apartments, detached and semi-detached homes. Furthermore, the Australian Army depot is located in the eastern part of Kingsford.
Recreation and Amenities
To honour the suburb's history, a noteworthy attraction is the commissioned mosaics featuring the Southern Cross plane and the mural of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, situated in the pedestrian mall area of Kingsford. Another distinctive aspect of Kingsford is its close proximity to the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
